What is Bjj?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art focusing on ground fighting and grappling. It emphasizes using leverage and technique to control or submit a larger opponent, primarily through joint locks and chokeholds. Developed in Brazil, BJJ is derived from Judo and is known for its effectiveness in self-defence and as a foundational martial art in mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions.

What do I bring/wear to my first class?

Bring a water bottle with you - we provide, fresh, filtered water. For Gi sessions we will lend you the Gi on your first session.

For No Gi and MMA sessions bring shorts and t-shirt.

Is Bjj effective for self-defence?

BJJ is highly effective for self-defence as it teaches control and submission techniques that can neutralize threats without relying on size or strength. It emphasizes leverage, positioning, and strategy, allowing a smaller person to defend against a larger opponent effectively.

Can I compete?

We regularly take our students to Bjj competitions. Once you're ready if you want to compete you can.

Is Bjj safe for children?

Yes, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is safe for children. It focuses on technique and strategy over physical strength, making it suitable for young practitioners. Classes for kids are typically tailored to their age and development level, emphasizing discipline, respect, and self-confidence while ensuring safety.

Am I too old for Bjj?

No! We have classes for everyone no matter the age. Bjj is amazing for helping your mobility and strength along with learning a great Martial Art.
